Sing, Sing, Sing
Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, May 30 from 2-4 pm as we honor Benny Goodman! Bandleader, clarinetist and composer, Goodman was known as "The King of Swing." His collaboration with Fletcher Henderson created the sound known as swing, which became so influential an era of American history was named after it. His 1938 performance at Carnegie Hall is described as the single most important jazz concert in history, and many of the biggest names in jazz got started working in his band. Benny Goodman was also a pioneer of racial integration, one of the first white bandleaders to hire and perform with black musicians. Show: May 23, 2010

First Lady of Song
Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, April 25 from 2-4 p.m. as we pay tribute to Ella Fitzgerald! Fitzgerald was one of the greatest singers of the twentieth century. Her range spanned three octaves and her clarity of tone was unmatched. Ira Gershwin once said "I never knew how good our songs were until I heard Ella Fitzgerald sing them." In a career that spanned six decades she recorded over 200 albums, won 14 Grammys, and was awarded the National Medal of Art by President Ronald Reagan, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George H.W. Bush. We'll hear her earliest recordings with the Chick Webb orchestra, selections from her groundbreaking Songbook series, her collaborations with legendary bandleaders like Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie, and even hear her shatter a glass for Memorex. Tune in for an afternoon of incomparable jazz singing by Ella, First Lady of Song.

Hooray for Hollywood

Lush Life
Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, November 29 as we honor composer Billy Strayhorn! Strayhorn worked for decades with Duke Ellington, and during their collaboration wrote some of Ellington's most iconic works, like "Take the 'A' Train," "Satin Doll," "Lush Life" and "Chelsea Bridge." Strayhorn developed his love of music right here in Hillsborough North Carolina, where he spent much of his childhood.
Often called an "invisible genius," Billy Strayhorn never sought the limelight and spent most of his career in Ellington's shadow. Ellington described Strayhorn as "my right arm, my left arm, all the eyes in the back of my head, my brain waves in his head, and his in mine." Tune in and learn more about this immensely talented composer and arranger.

Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, November 22 as we celebrate the 110th birthday of Hoagy Carmichael! One of the more jazz-oriented composers in the 1930s, Carmichael wrote hundreds of of songs including classics like "Stardust," "Georgia On My Mind" and "Up the Lazy River." Sometimes called the first singer-songwriter, Carmichael was a talented pianist and singer. We will hear his greatest songs performed by Carmichael himself and by Divaville Lounge Favorites. We'll also hear rare early recordings, and clips from Carmichael's Hollywood acting career. Tune in for an afternoon of "Stardust Melodies"!
