Sing, Sing, Sing

Sing, Sing, Sing Step into the Divaville Lounge on Sunday, May 30 from 2-4 pm as we honor Benny Goodman! Bandleader, clarinetist and composer, Goodman was known as "The King of Swing." His collaboration with Fletcher Henderson created the sound known as swing, which became so influential an era of American history was named after it. His 1938 performance at Carnegie Hall is described as the single most important jazz concert in history, and many of the biggest names in jazz got started working in his band. Benny Goodman was also a pioneer of racial integration, one of the first white bandleaders to hire and perform with black musicians.

We'll hear some of Benny Goodman's earliest recordings from the late 1920s, his seminal work with Fletcher Henderson, his range from large swing orchestra to small jazz combo, his live radio programs, his exploration of classical music, and of course, selections from the legendary Carnegie Hall concert. Tune in for two hours of Benny Goodman, and "Let's Dance"!

Today's program includes several performances from radio broadcasts in the late 1930s. To purchase a collection of Benny Goodman radio broadcasts (or listen to a free sample online), visit OTR-CAT.com.
